Thomas S. SalingerChair
Mr. Salinger is Chair of the Board of Directors and chairs the Executive Committee and the Corporate Compliance Committee. He also serves on the Board Development Committee. He is a partner and former section head of the Trial Section of Rutan & Tucker, LLP. He has extensive experience in construction, landslide, real estate, title insurance and commercial litigation. Salinger currently serves as co-chair of the firm's Construction Law Practice Group and is an active member of the firm's Financial Practices Group.
Mr. Salinger is a member of local, state and national Bar Associations and has been actively involved as a board member for Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Thrift Stores and CHOC Padrinos.
Frank Talarico, Jr.
Frank Talarico, Jr. is the President & Chief Executive Officer for Goodwill of Orange County. The nonprofit organization provides education, training, and employment services to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment in order to enter the workforce, upgrade their job skills, or improve their quality of life.
Talarico’s career has been focused primarily in forging strategic partnerships and rapid organizational growth. He is known for his business acumen both in the private sector and by nonprofit organizations, for his corporate development skills, and for his expertise in strategic planning.
Prior to joining Goodwill, Talarico served as a the CEO of JSerra, a private Catholic school in San Juan Capistrano, where he was responsible for rapid expansion, an overhauled and improved brand image, and significant debt reduction. Preceding this engagement, he was Vice President of Institutional Advancement for Servite High School where he and his team rebranded the forty-five year old organization, dramatically increased profit and positioned the organization for expansion. Talarico successfully developed a regional Foundation for the PGA of America from a start-up corporation with one employee into the largest operating nonprofit of its kind. Talarico also served as a consultant to the NFL Players Association, The California Interscholastic Federation, The State of California Governor’s Office and the Departments of Labor and Education. In the latter role, Talarico was selected by the Governor to serve in a leadership position on the Governor’s own strategic marketing and communications task force for statewide workforce initiatives.
Talarico received his undergraduate degree with honors from the University of California, Berkeley. He earned a Master’s Degree in Applied Communications from California State University, Fullerton where he graduated top of his class. He is an active member of several community organizational boards including the PGA of America, Southern California University of Health Sciences, Southern California Workforce Investment Board and the Orange County Business Council. In 2010 Talarico was recognized as one of OC Metro Magazine’s “Forty Under Forty” honoring the county’s top, young professionals. Since arriving at Goodwill of Orange County in 2012, the organization has already enjoyed marked growth and poised for doubling the number of people it serves overt the next five years. Under Talarico’s leadership, in 2012 Goodwill was recognized as one of Orange County’s “Most Trusted Brands.”
A long-time resident of Orange County, Talarico lives in San Juan Capistrano with his wife Alaina and their four children.
Jacqueline F. Akerblom
Jacqueline is Grant Thornton’s West Region Managing Partner which includes 11 offices in the Western United States. She has nearly 30 years of experience working with principally technology, and other industrial companies as both an audit and corporate finance partner.
In her role as regional managing partner, Jacqueline is responsible for the operations of the firm’s 11 offices, including over 600 professionals who provide specialty services in audit, tax and consulting. She spent over three years based in Grant Thornton’s London office heading the U.S. transaction services team there as well as 14 years based in the firms Silicon Valley office in San Jose and has served as the engagement partner on a number of the firm’s largest clients. Jacqueline has worked extensively with both complex public and private technology companies throughout her career.
Jacqueline has previously served the firm as the Southern California practice managing partner, the national managing partner for international client service and as one of two U.S. partners on the Grant Thornton International Board of Governors, as well as the national managing partner for gender diversity. Jacqueline has also served as an elected member of the firm’s Partnership Board charged with governing the firm on behalf of its partners.
Jacqueline holds a BBA in Accounting from the University of San Diego.
Betty Appleton is a member of the Board of Directors, and serves as Chair of the Human Services Advisory Committee, and a Member at Large on the Executive Committee.
Appleton is the Director of Guest Claims, Workers’ Compensation and Services for Guests with Disabilities at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. In this role, Appleton oversees the teams responsible for resolving guest and cast claims, and providing insights for improving guest and cast safety.
As a member of the Resort’s Services for Guests with Disabilities Steering Committee and Ride Access Teams, she acts as a resource on accessibility issues, providing guidance on collateral, policies and modifications. She works closely with Walt Disney Imagineering to ensure that attractions designed for accessibility are practicable and delight guests. A 43-year veteran of the Disneyland Resort, Appleton has held a variety of roles in human resources, environmental affairs, emergency preparedness, and safety.
In addition, she is actively involved in leading the diversity resource groups at the Disneyland Resort, serving since its inception as executive champion for CastABLE, a group of cast members with disabilities, and supporters who promote respect, equality and the appreciation of people with disabilities.
A native of California, Appleton is an alumna of California State University, Long Beach where she received her bachelor’s degree in sociology and a K-9 teaching credential. Appleton resides in Orange County.
Cheryl L. Barrett
Ms. Barrett is a past Chair of the Board of Directors (2011-2012). She currently chairs the Planned Giving Committee, serves on the Executive Committee, and is a member of the Board Development Committee.
Ms. Barrett is a partner with Feruzzo & Feruzzo, LLP in Newport Beach, and her practice is devoted entirely to Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Administration.
Ms. Barrett is a member of the California Bar Association, Estate Planning and Probate Section. Ms. Barrett’s knowledge of board governance is key to ensuring that Goodwill abides by ethical and legal standards in making its vision a reality.
Sharon Bishop serves as Chair of the Donated Goods/ Retail Committee. Mrs. Bishop brings an extensive knowledge of store operations, training and development, customer service, merchandising and strategic planning in the retail industry to the Board of Directors.
Mrs. Bishop is currently District Manager for TJMaxx, leading stores in both southern and northern California, which generate sales of more than 100 million. Prior to joining the TJX Corporation, Mrs. Bishop worked as District Team Leader for Target Corporation for 10 years leading a team of nearly 2,000 employees across nine stores in the Riverside County area.
Robert O. Briggs
Mr. Briggs is a member of the Board of Directors, and serves on the Real Estate Committee. Under Mr. Briggs' leadership and former ownership, Briggs Electric became one of the leading electrical contractors in all of Orange County. Mr. Briggs is now a developer and syndicates small to medium sized industrial buildings throughout Southern California.
Mr. Briggs was involved as a volunteer consultant on the expansion of Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach and is on the Board of Directors for the Santa Ana Country Club
Mr. Compton is a member of Goodwill’s Board of Directors, chairs the IT Committee, and serves on the Corporate Compliance Committee. He is the Vice President at Hays of California Insurance Services in Costa Mesa.
Prior to his board appointment at Goodwill he served as a volunteer at the Goodwill Fitness Center, where he has been able to demonstrate his passion for providing greater health and wellness to people with physical disabilities or chronic illness. Adam and his wife, Allison, have two daughters. Allison won a bronze medal in the U.S. Paralympics in 2004 in Athens, Greece in volleyball.
Steven M. CoyneImmediate Past Chair
Mr. Coyne is the immediate Past Chair of the Board of Directors. He serves on the Executive Committee, Budget & Finance Committee, and Chair of the Board Development Committee. With extensive experience in strategic planning and an impressive background in real estate development and finance, Mr. Coyne brings solid leadership skills and direction that will help guide Goodwill's future growth.
In past years, Mr. Coyne served as Board Treasurer, Chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee and Chairman of the 2008 Walter Knott Award Luncheon. Mr. Coyne is a commercial real estate development professional at the Coyne Development Corporation whose projects extend throughout Orange, San Diego, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties. Prior to starting his firm, he was the Vice President of LNR Property Corporation.
James R. Conner
James Conner is the Treasurer of the Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Budget & Finance Committee and Chair of the Goodwill Golf Invitational Committee. Mr. Conner is a certified public accountant with more than forty years experience. He is highly skilled in providing advice and consultation on financial reporting and accounting matters.
Mr. Conner is currently audit partner at Talley & Company. Prior to joining the local accounting firm, Mr. Conner was a partner at Deloitte & Touche, LLP for twenty-two years, focusing on financial reporting issues including the accounting for and advice on structuring acquisition transactions, evaluating impairment issues, and the evaluation of agreements with respect to revenue recognition. Mr. Conner is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the California Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Laura Dang is the Secretary of the Board of Directors and serves on the Resource Development Team and Executive Committee. She is Vice President, Private Banking Relationship Manager with Union Bank. With 24 years of experience in the banking industry, Ms. Dang has invaluable experience in sales, management and leadership working with high net worth individuals and business owners.
As a volunteer she joins many of the area’s top professionals whose backgrounds cover a breadth of experience who all share a passion for Goodwill’s mission.
Kerry Michael Finn
Kerry Michael Finn is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Human Services Advisory Committee and Planned Giving Advisory Council. He is currently the Managing Director of Financial Planning & Business Development at Fiduciary Trust Company of California. Mr. Finn has more than 19 years experience as a financial professional with special expertise in financial planning, estate planning, and business succession and tax analysis for individuals, families and corporations.
Mr. Finn received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and completed the Certified Financial Planner Program from University of California at Irvine.
Erin S. Fukuto
Erin S. Fukuto is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Budget and Finance Committee.
Fukuto, Certified Public Accountant, heads the firm’s estate, gift, and trust services with offices in Irvine and Torrance.
She specializes in income tax and estate planning with an emphasis on minimizing taxes, increasing corporate profits and individual net worth, and helping not-for-profit organizations maintain their tax exempt status. Her responsibilities at RPG include: partner in charge of trust, estate and gift tax services; individual, estate, gift and trust tax planning and compliance; corporate, partnership and business tax planning and compliance; providing advisory support, tax and compliance services to nonprofit organizations; transactional and business succession planning.
Erin has over 25 years of experience in public accounting providing tax compliance services and consulting for high net worth individuals, closely held businesses and not-for-profit organizations. Erin graduated from USC with a B.S. in Accounting and completed her Masters’ Degree at Golden Gate University. Along with being a board member on the Orange County Estate Planning Council, she is the former Chairman of Orange County/Long Beach Estate Planning Interest Group, Member of the CalCPA State Estate Planning Committee, and member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. Additionally, Erin is a founding member and officer of the Orange County Chapter of Advisors in Philanthropy and a member of the Professional Advisory Council for Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
Scott M. Giacobello
Scott Giacobello is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Audit Committee. Giacobello possesses a unique blend of talent, skills and business acumen including internal audits and compliance functions as well as acting as co-lead in the company's enterprise risk management program.
His career as a financial professional brings significant expertise to his role as a member of Goodwill's Audit Committee, where he is able to advise on the unique challenges of financial planning and management as well as fundraising, tax issues, accounting practices, budgeting, cash management and investments. Giacobello received a Bachelors of Business Administration from Notre Dame. Giacobello is a member of the America Institute of Certified Public Accountants and serves as Treasurer for the Notre Dame Club of Orange County.
Mr. Gluchowski is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Budget & Finance Committee. He is President & CEO of The Hillman Group. In his former role with the company formerly known as Stanley Black & Decker, Inc., he served as the vice president of global operations.
Prior to Black & Decker he spent 14 years with Phelps Dodge Corporation in a variety of senior executive positions. Mr. Gluchowski has a BS in Industrial Management from Purdue University and holds a MBA from Indian University, Fort Wayne. He brings both excellent professional experience and a true passion for Goodwill's education, training and employment services as well as its numerous business solutions.
Mr. Gross is a member of the Board of Directors and is a member at Large on the Executive Committee
Wayne Gross, a founding partner of Greenberg Gross LLP, has been selected to serve as lead trial counsel by companies and executives in their most important business litigation matters.
His many trial victories including obtaining a $50 million jury verdict in a partnership dispute regarding the world-famous Hollywood Palladium. Wayne, a former federal prosecutor, also devotes a part of his practice to internal investigations, corporate crisis management, and white-collar defense. As a federal prosecutor, Wayne prosecuted cases of national significance and served in various supervisory positions, including chief of the Orange County Division of the Office of the United States Attorney, Central District of California. He has been repeatedly recognized for his outstanding trial work, including being recently selected by his peers for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America®. Wayne currently serves as President of the Orange County Bar Association, the second largest bar association in California, with more than 7000 members. He also has served as a law school adjunct professor on the topics of trial advocacy, constitutional law, criminal procedure and evidence.
K. Brian Horton
Brian Horton is a past Chair of the Board of Directors (2009-2010) and Treasurer (2003-2004). Currently he serves on the Executive, Budget and Finance, Board Development and Audit Committees. He is also a member of the Investment Committee.
Mr. Horton is President of 1st Enterprise Bank and was formerly President/Southern Division of Mellon 1st Business Bank, with oversight responsibility of Orange County, South Bay and Inland Empire Regional offices.
Kevin B. Jones
Kevin B. Jones is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Donated Goods Retail Committee. Mr. Jones has more than 30 years experience in all aspects of retail and wholesale operations. Mr. Jones brings special expertise in product acquisition, project management, sales and inventory, retail accounting, and operations to the Board.
Mr. Jones is currently Buyer of Tobacco & Cooler products for Costco Wholesale’s Los Angeles Regional Office, managing products in 58 locations, 51 here in Southern California, with annual category sales totaling more than a billion dollars. Over the course of his career Mr. Jones has been involved in a number of organizations, including Anaheim’s Economic Conference, Children’s Miracle Network and United Way.
John M. Kearney
Mr. Kearney is a member of the Board of Directors and serves on the Goodwill Invitational Advisory Committee and the Board Development Committee. In 2008 he served as an Ambassador for the Working for Independence Luncheon. He is a Vice President for the Consumer Banking Group’s Orange County Market of U.S. Bank. Both Mr. Kearney and his employer have provided vital support for Goodwill’s programs. U.S. Bank is the Title Sponsor of the 2013 Goodwill Invitational and was the Presenting Sponsor for the 2010 Goodwill Invitational.
Dedicated in his commitment to youth and underserved members of our community Mr. Kearney volunteers for both Junior Achievement’s JA Day and garners support of United Way’s Corporate Pledge Drive.
Mr. Seidner is a member of Goodwill’s Board of Directors and chairs the Real Estate Committee. He is co-owner of Cardinal Development, a real estate firm specializing in the development of commercial projects throughout Southern California.
Mr Seidner and his wife are actively engaged with their children’s schools by serving on boards and fundraising committees, as well as supporting several charities that include their church, Court Appointed Special Advocates, World Vision and Operation Smile.
Mr. Tripp is a member of the Board of Directors. He serves on the Goodwill Invitational Advisory Committee and the Gala Committee. He has served as Chair of the Goodwill Invitational Golf Tournament Committee for multiple years. He is a Financial Representative for the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and specializes in Estate Planning, Executive Benefits, Personal Life Insurance and Investment Allocation.
Mr. Tripp has also served on the Board of Directors for the Orange County Bar Foundation and as the New Business Capital Campaign Chair for the Orange County United Way. He has been involved with the United Way Endowment Committee and their Tocqueville Society.
A Richard TruebloodVice Chair
Mr. Trueblood is the Vice Chair of Goodwill's Board of Directors and serves on the Budget & Finance Committee, the Compensation Committee, and the Corporate Compliance Committee. He is a retired Business Executive.
His long career has provided him with expertise in many facets of business including operations, finance, corporate compliance and strategic planning. He also serves on the board of 1st Enterprise Bank.
Mr. Valentine is a past Chair of the Board of Directors (2007-2008) and Treasurer (2005-2006). He has served on the Board since 1998. He has served and chaired numerous committees and currently Chairs the Resource Development Team and serves on the Real Estate and Human Services Committees.
He is a past recipient of the Spirit of Volunteerism Award given by the Volunteer Center of Orange County and is passionate for Goodwill’s mission. Even in his one year absence from the Board in 2012 he continued to serve on the Resource Development Team and Human Service Committees.
His career in construction and development has made possible noteworthy contributions to capital projects at Goodwill where he volunteered his time as the project manager in the construction of Goodwill’s Fitness Center and assisted the facilities staff on the campus renovation and construction of the Marketplace.
Mr. Valentine is Executive Vice President of Construction Management for Riverrock Real Estate Group. He is also on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity in Orange County.
