Alex grew up browsing the aisles of Goodwill of Orange County thrift stores. Today, life has come full circle as Alex proudly works as a Sales Associate at Goodwill OC’s flagship store in Santa Ana. But that’s just the beginning of Alex’s journey with Goodwill OC. Through the organization’s Career Pathways Program, Alex is on a mission to achieve his lifelong dream: becoming a nurse.
“My dream is to become a certified nurse. Career Pathways has taught me that it takes baby steps. Every single step counts. If it was up to me, I’d probably just go in circles. This program gives me the map,” Alex shares.
What Makes Career Pathways Different?
Launched in May 2023, Career Pathways was designed to uncover team members’ talents and aspirations, then create a customized career journey tailored to their goals. Through comprehensive assessments, personalized plans, one-on-one career navigation, and training, participants gain the tools to succeed—whether within Goodwill OC or beyond.
For Alex, that means balancing his current role in retail with classes and study sessions that bring him closer to nursing certification. And when challenges arise, the program steps in to remove barriers—whether it’s food assistance through The Good Market or digital skills training or other resources.
Alma: The Guide Behind the Scenes
Behind Alex’s progress is Alma, Career Pathways Supervisor and one of the program’s biggest champions.
“We started Career Pathways in 2023 with a goal of 40 individuals. That grew to 70, then 85, and now 117. Seeing that need was very impactful,” Alma explains.
Alma and her team provide accountability and encouragement every step of the way.
“It’s checking in, keeping the individual accountable. They’re in the driver’s seat—we’re just navigating,” Alma says.
Alma’s support is very personal for Alex:
“Alma’s always encouraging and helping me. When I feel like giving up, I push through because I want to make her proud. I want to show her my grades—my A’s and B’s.”
A Lifeline for Hope and Opportunity
Alex calls Career Pathways a lifeline:
“This program taught me resilience and self-sufficiency. There’s always a second chance if you take it. My path leads to happiness and peace—and I believe we’re all here to help one another.”
Alex’s story is proof that with determination—and the right support—dreams can become reality.
