If you had to describe Ellen in just a few words, they’d be: hardworking, friendly, and fiercely determined.
Ellen began her journey in 2005 as a Courtesy Clerk at Stater Bros. But her story truly took flight in 2010 when she joined Goodwill of Orange County’s Supported Employment Program—a program designed to empower individuals with disabilities by connecting them to meaningful work and advocating for their success.
As a Courtesy Clerk, Ellen’s responsibilities included bagging groceries, stocking shelves, and managing carts. But her real superpower was her exceptional customer service. Whether it was greeting shoppers with warmth or helping them find what they needed, Ellen made every customer feel seen and supported.
“I try to do a good job and do whatever they ask me to do,” Ellen exclaimed.
With the help of her Goodwill OC job coaches, Ellen received resources like computer training and workflow tips that helped her grow professionally. These tools weren’t just helpful—they were transformative.
One of Ellen’s standout qualities is her proactive kindness. She’s known for greeting every customer with a smile and offering help before they even ask. And if she doesn’t have the answer, she’s quick to find a teammate who does—ensuring no customer leaves without the support they need.
“Ellen is fantastic and so friendly. Over the years she always had a smile on her face. She’s one of the reasons why I come to this Stater Bros location,” a customer stated.
After years of consistent excellence and gentle encouragement from her team to pursue a promotion, Ellen finally took the leap—and landed it. She now proudly wears her General Manager apron, a symbol of her growth, grit, and grace.
Her managers describe her as the most dependable, experienced, and consistent employee they’ve ever had. “Ellen is always walking around finding something to do and she is always good with customers. There isn’t a moment where she isn’t doing something”, a co-worker Isabel said. While Ellen admits to feeling a bit nervous about her new role, she’s equally excited—and her team couldn’t be prouder.
