Joanna began her journey with Goodwill of Orange County two years ago after learning about the Employment First program from a local college. The Employment First program addresses barriers to employment while providing comprehensive workforce-development programs for individuals with disabilities. With a strong interest in event planning and the party supply business, she joined the program and was placed into employment at a local Party City location – the perfect match!
Vanessa, Joanna’s job coach, recalls, “When she first started, she was shy, but I’m so glad she opened up and became more of herself. She was scared to do certain things, and I kept encouraging her. I would tell her to keep going, you can do it.” These inspirational words stayed with Joanna, motivating her to become more independent.
Joanna approaches every task with pride and dedication. Her daily routine includes gathering orders and go bags, organizing the store, and fixing the balloon displays. Her favorite task is blowing up balloons and arranging bouquets.
“She is on top of everything she has to do. She does need assistance at times, which is what I am here for,” says Vanessa. Joanna and Vanessa’s strong relationship, built on trust and motivation, fosters an efficient and collaborative environment within the Party City team.
Having a job has significantly impacted Joanna’s life. “I like working; it makes me feel more independent. I feel happier and more excited. When I get my check, I can’t wait to spend all my money,” Joanna exclaimed with a big smile.
“I’m really glad I met her and I enjoy working with her. She makes my job so fulfilling, and I love coming to work because of her,” Vanessa said with a chuckle.
Paul, the store manager, has seen Joanna grow tremendously. “When Joanna first started, it was night and day [difference]. She didn’t know much, but she was eager to learn, and through the training, she has excelled in her role. She really helps out a lot and takes care of the customers. She is extremely reliable and dependable, and she loves the customers. It’s been such a great collaboration with Goodwill OC.”
