From a young age, Scott G. had big dreams of one day being a writer. It wasn’t until later in his life that he felt confident enough to pursue that dream.
Scott pursued a degree in creative writing along with taking various writing and poetry classes. At the same time, Scott needed to provide for his family and sought out a job that would encourage his writing pursuits, but also inspire additional career aspirations.
On the job hunt, Scott kept hitting roadblocks because of his physical limitations. He became discouraged when employers looked at his disability instead of his strengths. With the help of a friend, he was connected to Goodwill of Orange County and interviewed for an opening on the E-Commerce team. There was no hesitation because of Scott’s disability, but instead opportunity and a job offer shared.
Scott started working first with LEGO items, sorting and listing them for sale on ShopGoodwill.com, and then transitioned to an E-Commerce Clerk 1 where he handles the listing and sale of high-priced items on Goodwill OC’s online marketplaces.
Scott’s everyday tasks consist of listing items that are difficult or complicated to sell. Scott loves working in a fast paced environment with his supportive team.
”Without one moving part everything collapses,” he says.
All the teams working in the warehouse collaborate on a daily basis to generate more revenue to help fuel career opportunities.
“Goodwill of Orange County gave me an opportunity and a chance to finally get into a work environment and a career. Before Goodwill, I was constantly getting rejected. Working here has been a blessing and I’m always learning new things every day.”
Scott is able to sell high valued items that in return help drive our overall mission.
“Goodwill has impacted my life creatively and sometimes
emotionally. Its core values of kindness and innovation have also impacted my
life.”
Despite his past challenges on finding a job Scott has a
positive outlook and encourages others to keep pursuing their career goals.
“Keep on pushing, if things push back, keep moving forward.”
With the confidence of having a stable career, Scott started
writing again. After three years of working on his very own book, Scott is now
a proud published author.
Goodwill OC is proud to play a part in Scott’s pursuit of his dreams.
