Today’s Job Match Q&A, we get to meet Floree!
Discover how Floree’s journey as an Employment Specialist at Goodwill of Orange County has impacted her life.Â
1. What is your first name, where do you work, and what is your job title?
My first name is Floree, and I work for the Goodwill Employment WORKS in Mission Viejo. My title is Employment Specialist.
2. What was your biggest barrier to getting back to work?
My biggest barrier going back to work was thinking that I was not good enough for a position and that I would never succeed in a job and fail because of my learning disabilities. I also believed that I would not be able to keep up with the job demands. I had a lot of doubts about myself and didn’t think I was important enough to be in a job or fit in. I also didn’t think my opinions would matter in my job field and that people would think of me as weak due to my mental health conditions. I also didn’t think I was qualified, or not smart enough, or enough education. I was grateful that this was not all true.
3. How did Goodwill Employment WORKS help you get back to work and maintain your job?
Goodwill Employment WORKS helped me get back on my feet because they believed in me and they took the time to see and hear me out. The staff had my back, and there was no judgment about my learning disabilities and my mental health. I had support and care for all the staff at Employment WORKS. Because of their caring services, I started to believe in myself again and had more hope for myself. I now work in a job that I love.
4. What is it like being an Employment Specialist?
Being an Employment Specialist is a special job for me because I get to help others who are on the same page as I was. This job is rewarding and challenging at the same time. I am passionate about helping others. I am always learning something new on the job from my team and the clients I work with. I love being able to provide help and support to the participants and watch them reach their goals and succeed, knowing they accomplished what they wanted to do.
5. How is working improving your quality of life today?
Working has improved my life because I have a job to go to every day. This has improved my mental health because I have a lot more confidence in myself; I believe that I can grow and see myself succeeding. I feel more confident in myself because I have worked really hard to get here. I can reflect knowing that I have accomplished a lot. I asked for help and saw the light through the darkness I was in.
6. What is your final message to anyone looking to volunteer or work?
My final message for anyone who is struggling with mental health is there is hope. There is light through the tunnel, and anyone can get through the darkness. If you have a dream job, go for it, but remember, nothing happens in one day. It takes time, and you need to be patient and kind to yourself. Take baby steps first and work towards the dream job you want. It’s not impossible; believe it is possible.
